Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of thermally stratified medium on a free convection flow from a sphere, which is rotating about the vertical axis, immersed in a stably thermally stratified medium.

Design/methodology/approach

An implicit finite‐difference scheme in combination with the quasi‐linearization technique is applied to obtain the steady state non‐similar solutions of the governing boundary layer equations for flow and temperature fields.

Findings

The numerical results indicate that the heat transfer rate at the wall decreases significantly with an increasing thermal stratification parameter, but its effect on the skin friction coefficients is rather minimum. In fact, the presence of thermal stratification of the medium influences the heat transfer at wall to be in opposite direction, that is, from fluids to the wall above a certain height. The heat transfer rate increases but the skin frictions decrease with the increase of Prandtl number. In particular, the effect of buoyancy force is much more sensitive for low Prandtl number fluids (Pr = 0.7, air) than that of high Prandtl number fluids (Pr = 7, water). Also the skin friction in rotating direction is less sensitive to the buoyancy force as the buoyancy force acts in the streamwise direction for the present study of thermally stratified medium.

Research limitations/implications

The ambient temperature T∞∞ is assumed to increase linearly with height $h$. The viscous dissipation term, which is usually small for natural convection flows, has been neglected in the energy equation. The flow is assumed to be axi‐symmetric. The Boussinesq approximation is invoked for the fluid properties to relate density changes to temperature changes, and to couple in this way the temperature field to the flow field.

Practical implications

Free convection in a thermally stratified medium occurs in many environmental processes with temperature stratification, and in industrial applications within a closed chamber with heated walls. Also, free convections associated with heat rejection systems for long‐duration deep ocean powder modules where ocean environment is stratified are examples of such type.

Originality/value

The research presented in this paper investigates the free convection flow on a sphere, which is rotating with a constant angular velocity along its vertical axis in a stably thermally stratified fluid.

Abstract

Purpose

Effectively handling knowledge is crucial for any organization to survive and prosper in the turbulent environments of the modern era. Leadership is a central element for knowledge creation, acquisition, utilization and integration processes. Based on these considerations, this study aims to offer an overview of the evolution of the literature regarding the knowledge management-leadership relationship published over the past 20 years.

Design/methodology/approach

A bibliometric analysis coupled with a systematic literature review were performed over a data set of 488 peer-reviewed articles published from 1990 to 2018.

Findings

The authors discovered the existence of four well-polarized clusters with the following thematic focusses: human and relational aspects, systematic and performance aspects, contextual and contingent aspects and cultural and learning aspects. The authors then investigated each thematic cluster by reviewing the most relevant contributions within them.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the bibliometric analysis and the systematic literature review, the authors developed an interpretative framework aimed at uncovering several promising and little explored research areas, thus suggesting an agenda for future knowledge management-leadership research. Some steps of the paper selection process may have been biased by the interpretation of the researcher. The authors addressed this concern by performing a multiple human subject reading process whose reliability was confirmed by a Krippendorf’s alpha coefficient value >0.80.

Originality/value

To the best knowledge, this is the first study to map, systematize and discuss the literature concerned to the topic of the knowledge management-leadership relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the steady mixed convection flow over a vertical cone in the presence of surface mass transfer when the axis of the cone is inline with the flow.

Design/methodology/approach

In this case, the numerical difficulties to obtain the non‐similar solution are overcome by applying an implicit finite difference scheme in combination with the quasilinearization technique.

Findings

Numerical results are reported here to display the effects of Prandtl number, buoyancy and mass transfer (injection and suction) parameters at different stream‐wise locations on velocity and temperature profiles, and on skin friction and heat transfer coefficients.

Research limitations/implications

Thermo‐physical properties of the fluid in the flow model are assumed to be constant except the density variations causing a body force term in the momentum equation. The Boussinesq approximation is invoked for the fluid properties to relate the density changes to temperature changes and to couple in this way the temperature field to the flow field.

Practical implications

Convective heat transfer over a stationary cone is important for the thermal design of various types of industrial equipments such as heat exchangers, conisters for nuclear waste disposal, nuclear reactor cooling systems and geothermal reservoirs, etc.

Originality/value

The combined effects of thermal diffusion and surface mass transfer on a vertical cone has been studied.

Purpose

The use of Internet of Things (IoT) and networks has built a potential impact on the product cost and time in a company’s manufacturing process. These IoT solutions provide end-to-end visibility and faster introduction of merchandise and supplier in the market. The main aim of this research paper is to supply products with improved quality and cheaper price, whereas the rising response and quality of the client service.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper designs and develops two cases for selecting the most efficient vendor while keeping in mind the profit and cost constraints in optimization.

Findings

Outsourcing is a vital parameter to cut back the price and maximize the profit of the manufacturer. Therefore, the integration of supply chain with IoT can provide a solution to the cost optimization and supplier/vendor selection problems in supply chain management.

Research limitations/implications

The results show that the models are quite realistic and can help the IoT-based manufacturing units to make strategic decisions regarding product manufacturing and distribution.

Practical implications

The authors can further extend the model to derive the retailer’s profit function and develop the end product cost to the consumers and hence make it a n-level multi-vendor selection model for IoT-based systems.

Originality/value

The right choice of vendor for IoT-enabled business is a crucial concern. In this paper, the authors designed and developed multi-vendor models with in-house production and outsourcing decisions to meet the demand along with the vendor selection. The variable demands and designed variable unit cost function and batch order are set to make vendor selection more realistic.

Abstract

Purpose

To present a numerical model of squeeze casting process.

Design/methodology/approach

The modelling consists of two parts, namely, the mould filling and the subsequent thermal stress analysis during and after solidification. Mould filling is described by the Navier‐Stokes equations discretized using the Galerkin finite element method. The free surface is followed using a front tracking procedure. A thermal stress analysis is carried out, assuming that a coupling exists between the thermal problem and the mechanical one. The mechanical problem is described as an elasto‐visco‐plastic formulation in an updated Lagrangian frame. A microstructural solidification model is also incorporated for the mould filling and thermal stress analysis. The thermal problem is solved using enthalpy method.

Findings

During the mould‐filling process a quasi‐static arbitrary Lagrangian‐Eulerian (ALE) approach and a microstructural solidification model were found to be applicable. For the case of the thermal stress analysis the influence of gap closure, effect of initial stresses (geometric nonlinearity), large voids and good performance of a microstructural model have been demonstrated.

Research limitations/implications

The model can also be applied to the simulation of indirect castings. The final goal of the model is the ability to simulate the forming of the material after mould filling and during the solidification of the material. This is possible to achieve by applying arbitrary contact surfaces due to the sliding movement of the cast versus the punch and die.

Practical implications

The presented model can be used in engineering practice, as it incorporates selected second‐order effects which may influence the performance of the cast.

Originality/value

During the mould‐filling procedure a quasi‐static ALE approach has been applied to SQC processes and found to be generally applicable. A microstructural solidification model was applied which has been used for the thermal stress analysis only. During the thermal stress analysis the influence of gap closure and initial stresses (geometric nonlinearity) has been demonstrated.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to design a reliable multi-level, multi-product and multi-period location-inventory-routing three-echelon supply chain network, which considers disruption risks and uncertainty in the inventory system.

Design/methodology/approach

A robust optimization approach is used to deal with the effects of uncertainty, and a mixed-integer nonlinear programming multi-objective model is proposed. The first objective function seeks to minimize inventory costs, such as ordering costs, holding costs and carrying costs. It also helps to choose one of the two modes of bearing the expenses of shortage or using the excess capacity to produce at the expense of each. The second objective function seeks to minimize the risk of disruption in distribution centers and suppliers, thereby increasing supply chain reliability. As the proposed model is an non-deterministic polynomial-time-hard model, the Lagrangian relaxation algorithm is used to solve it.

Findings

The proposed model is applied to a real supply chain in the aftermarket automotive service industry. The results of the model and the current status of the company under study are compared, and suggestions are made to improve the supply chain performance. Using the proposed model, companies are expected to manage the risk of supply chain disruptions and pay the lowest possible costs in the event of a shortage. They can also use reverse logistics to minimize environmental damage and use recycled goods.

Originality/value

In this paper, the problem definition is based on a real case; it is about the deficiencies in the after-sale services in the automobile industry. It considers the disruption risk at the first level of the supply chain, selects the supplier considering the parameters of price and disruption risk and examines surplus capacity over distributors’ nominal capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the slippery slope framework by exploring different dimensions of compliance quality and tax minimisation under different tax climate manipulation by groups.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors run a random assignment of tax climate manipulations through questionnaire with 301 usable data collected from the full-time postgraduate students, employed individuals and self-employed individuals. Manipulation check and results are generated via multivariate analysis of variance.

Findings

The results confirm the biggest impact of synergistic climate on voluntary compliance, and small to medium impact of antagonistic climate on tax evasion across three groups.

Research limitations/implications

The manipulation of this research is constrained with two treatments in addition to the common pitfall of social desired responses of self-report.

Practical implications

Theoretically, this study empirically explores tax minimisation dimensions and provides new insights that only illegal tax minimisation is at maximum under the prevailing negative antagonistic climate, but not for legal tax minimisation. Second, the effect of tax climate represented by trust and power on enforced compliance is minimal, as compared to the strong effect of positive synergistic climate on voluntary compliance. As for policy implications, possible guidelines and interventions are outlined to policy makers which would lead to a better quality of compliance behaviour.

Originality/value

This study operationalises and manipulates tax climate from perceptions of trust, legitimate power and coercive power. It also further affirms the prior inconsistent findings in respect of tax behavioural intentions due to sampling group and cultural differences.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the economic benefits of managing an outpatient appointments system with technological innovations.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a quantitative methodological procedures aiming to evaluate the cost-benefit relation and also the payback of the management and operation of an outpatient appointments system with technological innovations.

Findings

This study found a great benefit-cost relation of 30.6 showing the great economic value and social impact of managing an outpatient appointments regulation system with technological innovations.

Research limitations/implications

This study presents contribution to the literature discussion about the economic evaluation of the benefits of managing and operating more effective outpatient appointments systems because of important technological innovations.

Practical implications

This paper presents and discusses the most important and commonly used strategies and technological innovations to deal with and to manage an outpatient appointment regulation system aiming to reduce the patient no-show rates.

Social implications

The findings of this study show a great benefit-cost relation of about 30.6 which is being reverted to the society.

Originality/value

There not exist many similar studies in the pertinent literature, mostly with the Brazilian contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

Rising production costs in coastal China have caused the popularity of the “China plus one” strategy, and the hike in oil prices favors near‐shore outsourcing to reduce transportation costs. Taking into consideration supply chain strategy, this paper aims to investigate the impacts of these major business environment changes on manufacturing outsourcing in China.

Design/methodology/approach

Considering costs and lead times, a bi‐objective integer programming model is developed to determine optimal supply chain configuration decisions under various business environment scenarios. A case study with a family of footwear products is used to illustrate model application and present detailed analyses.

Findings

Impacts of factors could be non‐intuitive. Partial relocation may be better than relocating all manufacturing steps to lower‐cost regions. Coastal China is still attractive for products with short order lead times, because of its formation of industrial clusters and efficient logistics services.

Research limitations/implications

Only tangible factors including costs and lead times are evaluated; however, they offer valuable insight for the strategic decision of selecting outsourcing locations.

Practical implications

The analyses suggest differentiated outsourcing strategies depending on product and demand characteristics. The trend of moving manufacturing away from China is exaggerated. Coastal China has established industrial clusters and efficient logistics support to enable supply chain responsiveness; while inland China maintains a low cost comparable with competing Asian countries.

Originality/value

Existing studies on the research phenomenon focused on cost factors alone. This paper analyzes lead times as well. The study also introduces the network perspective into the research of offshore manufacturing outsourcing.
